Forward your job emails
Logbook never connects to your inbox. Instead, a filter in your email forwards messages from employers’ hiring systems to a private Logbook address. Logbook sees only those, and suggests updates to your tracker for you to confirm.
What Logbook does
- Sees only the emails your filter forwards, or that you forward yourself.
- Suggests updates and waits for you to confirm them.
- Shows you where each update came from, so you can check it yourself.
What it never does
- Connects to or reads your inbox.
- Keeps the text of your emails. It keeps only who sent each one and its subject.
- Sells or shares your data with anyone.
Set up forwarding
It’s private to you. Email sent to it shows up as suggestions on Today.
- In Gmail on a computer, open Settings (the gear), then See all settings → Forwarding and POP/IMAP → Add a forwarding address. Paste your Logbook address, then choose Next and Proceed.
- Gmail may ask you to confirm it’s you first. Then it sends a confirmation to Logbook, which appears here within a minute:
Waiting for Gmail’s code…Code: Confirm in GmailChoose Confirm in Gmail, or type the code into Gmail and choose Verify if Gmail sent one. Leave Disable forwarding selected in Gmail’s settings, so Gmail doesn’t forward everything. Nothing here after a few minutes? Choose Re-send email next to the address in Gmail.
- In Gmail’s search bar, choose Show search options (the sliders icon) and paste this into From:
Choose Create filter, tick Forward it to, pick your Logbook address, then Create filter.
To stop forwarding later
- In Gmail, open Settings → See all settings → Filters and Blocked Addresses. Tick the filter that forwards to your Logbook address and choose Delete.
- Then open Forwarding and POP/IMAP, pick your Logbook address in the list, and choose Remove address.
- In Outlook on the web, open Settings (the gear), then Mail → Rules → Add new rule. Name it Logbook.
- For the condition, choose Sender address includes and add each of these, pressing Enter after each one:
- For the action, choose Forward to and paste your Logbook address. Then choose Save.
- Work and school accounts sometimes block forwarding outside the organization. If nothing arrives, forward job emails yourself instead.
To stop forwarding later
In Outlook on the web, open Settings → Mail → Rules, then choose the bin icon next to your Logbook rule.
Forward any job email to your Logbook address, the way you’d forward it to a friend. Most email apps can also forward automatically with a rule. Use these sender addresses for it:
To stop, delete that rule in your email app’s settings.
The list covers the hiring systems most employers use. Add a recruiter’s address or an employer’s domain and it’s included in the filter text above. If you’ve already made your filter, update it with the new text.
Once your filter is saved, Logbook starts suggesting updates on Today as emails arrive.
Forwarding is on.
